The synagogue was built after the oriental design of the New Synagogue in Berlin. Shortly after WWII the Jewish community was forced to sell the synagogue since only a mere 7% of the entire Jewish community of Groningen survived the war. In 1981 the building was renovated and rehabilitated.

The synagogue building in the city of Groningen is a creation of the known, reformed architect Tjeerd Kuipers. The cross-shaped building was sanctualized in 1906 and is characterized by the Morish style, with middle eastern shapes formed in the windows and galleries. This new synagogue replaced an older one dated 1756, that was too small, but above all needed replacement. The oriental style was inspired by the Berlin synagogue, which was introduced by architect Gottfried Semper, with his designed synagogue in Dresden. Before the War, the Groningen synagogue had place for 600 people. In 1942 the building was closed for religious purposes by the Germans and was instead used as a storage for radio's, copper and tin. The precious thora-rolls and liturgical pieces were hidden in a bank safe in Groningen. Only 200 of the 2800 Jews in Groningen survived the war. The Jewish community therefore sold the building in 1952. Until 1975 the synagogue was in use a washing and laundry shop with the name Astra. After that, the building wasn't used for years and needed restauration. The Groningen city council decided to buy the building and to repair it. In 1981 rabbi Jacobs resanctualized the synagogue. Since then it is used as a 'sjoel' by the Jewish community and as a cultural space for concerts, expositions, tours and education by the Stichting Folkingestraat Synagoge.
